St. Rupert's Church

St. Rupert’s Church stands in the oldest part of Vienna, near where the Roman fort of Vindobona once stood. Built in the Romanesque style, it is dedicated to Saint Rupert, the patron saint of salt merchants who once traded along the nearby Danube channel. The church’s ivy-covered walls show signs of many rebuildings, from a fire in 1276 to damage in the Second World War. Its oldest parts include a 13th-century choir and a 15th-century southern nave, while Baroque touches were added in 1622. Inside, two Romanesque stained-glass windows still survive in the apse.
The church’s long history is marked by important documents and relics. A 1200 charter calls it the city’s oldest church, though later finds under St. Stephen’s Cathedral have cast doubt on this claim. For centuries it housed the Salt Office, which controlled the distribution and quality of salt in Vienna. Two of the city’s oldest bells, dating from about 1280, hang in the tower, and the oldest stained glass, from 1370, shows a crucified Christ and the Madonna with child. A plaque in the western gallery bears the emperor’s motto AEIOU, carved in 1439.
Visitors enter a space shaped by layers of time. The north tower holds a statue of Saint Rupert, while the apse contains the relic of Saint Vitalis, a Roman Christian martyr. The church overlooks Morzinplatz, where the Gestapo once tortured prisoners and organised deportations, giving the relic added meaning today. The surroundings include quiet lanes that follow the route of the old salt jetty, linking the church to Vienna’s earliest trade routes.
