Rote Säule
The Rote Säule is a mountain standing on the main chain of the Alps in the Venediger Group. It reaches 2,993 metres and marks the border between Salzburg and East Tyrol. The peak lies in the far north of Lienz district, between the Roter Kogel to the south-east and the Abretter to the north-west. A high col called Abretterscharte separates it from the Abretter. The mountain shows steep north and east faces while its southern side still holds the remains of a glacier named Gschlößkees. Climbers approach from the Venedigerhaus hut, following the Sandebentörl path before turning north-west towards the summit. The route is graded as a challenging alpine climb, requiring sure-footedness and a head for heights. The mountain’s name, meaning ‘red pillar’, refers to the reddish rock that gives the peak its striking colour against the sky. Views from the top stretch across the Venediger Group and into the Hohe Tauern range. On the descent, walkers often pause at the Abretterscharte col to admire the glacier remains below. The contrast between the red rock and the white ice makes the scene memorable. The route back to Venedigerhaus follows the same path, completing a demanding but rewarding day in the high Alps.
