The Pfarrkirche Vitis stands in the market town of Vitis in Lower Austria. It is a Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. The building sits within a former fortified churchyard that once protected the village.
The church’s history reaches back to 1296, when its parish priest appeared in a deed now kept in the neighbouring parish house of Echsenbach. For centuries Vitis was an important local centre with its own manor and rights to collect tithes from fourteen villages. In the 16th century the Reformation briefly took hold, and in the 18th century the parish boundaries were redrawn during reforms ordered by Emperor Joseph II. The present church is cared for by a priest who also serves Echsenbach.
The late-Gothic nave, built in the first half of the 15th century, has four bays with ribbed vaulting supported on octagonal pillars. The tower was raised in the early 18th century and then shortened after storm damage, receiving its current bell-hood in 1853. Inside, the high altar dates from about 1732 and shows Saint Bartholomew beneath rich stucco drapery. The side altars, pulpit and organ all belong to later periods, while the Nikolauskapelle once served as a charnel house. The surrounding churchyard still holds the old cemetery cross and the protective earthworks that once made this a place of refuge.
