Pfarrkirche Eberau

The parish church of Eberau stands at the southern end of the village green in Eberau, a small community in Burgenland near the Hungarian border. Built for Saint Joseph, it belongs to the deanery of Güssing in the diocese of Eisenstadt and has been protected as a listed building since the 1970s. The present church replaced an earlier structure and was rededicated in 1904 after a period when the site served as a Protestant church and later as a Catholic filial church under the dedication of the Assumption.
The church’s architecture mixes Gothic and Baroque styles. The southern choir dates from the 15th century, while the nave and tower were added around 1745. The tower rises in three storeys with a stone pyramid roof and corner pilasters. Inside, the choir has a net-ribbed vault with painted keystones and narrow Gothic windows. The nave is a plain barrel-vaulted hall with an organ loft above the entrance, its balustrade gently curved.
Inside, a Baroque high altar from the 1730s shows the Holy Family painted by Joseph Kredisch in 1742. Flanking statues represent Saints Peter, Paul, Barbara and Anne, and the Erdödy family coat of arms appears above. Two simpler side altars carry images of Saint Nepomuk and Saint Elisabeth from the 1730s. A carved figure of the Immaculate Conception and a seven-stop organ installed in 1967 complete the furnishings.
