Ofenberg

The Ofenberg rises just east of Wolfhagen in northern Hesse, part of the West Hessian Bergland within the Habichtswald Nature Park. Its slopes are covered mainly with beech and pine woods, and the summit sits 372.5 metres above sea level. To the north the Mühlenwasser stream curves past the hill, while south-west the Limeckebach flows through the Wolfhager Tal. Farmers cultivate the open plateau on the eastern side, linking the wooded Hohen Rücken ridge to the Helfenberg hill near the district of Philippinenburg. The Ofenberg-Turm observation tower has stood on the summit since 1964, offering views across Wolfhagen and the surrounding hügelland. A short walk south-west brings visitors to the Waldrestaurant Wolfsschänke, where meals are served beside the forest. A small water tower marks the junction of the forest track leading up from the parking area. On the southern spur, the Hessenklinik Wolfhagen hospital occupies the Kleine Ofenberg. Several long-distance paths cross the area: the Märchenlandweg runs between Wolfhagen and Nothfelden, the Studentenpfad between Wolfhagen and Altenhasungen, and the Eco-Pfad Kulturgeschichte Wolfhagen circles the hill. The landscape is a patchwork of woodland and farmland, with the Isthaberg massif looming to the south-east and the Helfenberg to the east. A network of forest and hiking trails winds through the slopes, inviting short strolls or longer walks. The Wolfhager Schweiz name is sometimes used for the group of hills that includes Ofenberg, Festberg and Helfenberg. From the tower the eye follows the gentle ridges and valleys of the Ostwaldecker Randsenken region.
