The Mutmalspitze stands in the Ötztal Alps, a high ridge of rock and ice in western Tirol. It reaches 3 522 metres above sea level and overlooks the wild upper Pitztal glaciers. The summit lies north of the Hintere Schwärze, Tirol’s highest peak, and forms part of the continuous horizon of three-thousand-metre summits.
Climbers regard the route from Martin-Busch-Hütte as the normal way up. The hut sits at 2 919 metres and serves as the last warm shelter before the glacier crossing. Walter Klier’s Alpenvereinsführer lists the final snow and ice slopes that lead to the summit ridge. The guidebook warns of crevasses and changing weather on the high plateau.
From the top the view stretches north to the Inn valley and south to the main chain of the Alps. The ridge itself is narrow, with cornices on the east side and steep drops on the west. The descent follows the same glacier back to the hut, where walkers often rest before the long return to the valley.
