Marstall
The Marstall stands on the Domberg in Freising, Bavaria. It was built as a court stable for the prince-bishops of Freising. Today it houses the day-care centre for the nearby Domgymnasium, the Domsingschule and Renovabis, the Catholic Church’s aid organisation for Eastern Europe. The building was erected under Prince-Bishop Albrecht Sigismund of Bavaria. Plans in 1668 envisaged a riding hall above the stables, but these were abandoned. Instead the upper floor became a picture gallery for the prince-bishops. After the end of the prince-bishopric in 1802 the state took over the building. Later it served as a school before falling empty. In 1981 the archdiocese bought it and converted it for its present uses. Visitors find the Marstall on the south side of the Domhof. A baroque belvedere stands between the Marstall and the prince-bishop’s residence. South of the building the Domberg drops steeply to the Moosach and Isar rivers. The roof of the underground car park below serves as a terrace. Inside, the ground floor holds the day-care centre, the first floor the Domsingschule and the second floor Renovabis.
