The Marchkopf stands in the Tuxer Alps, a 2 499-metre peak south-east of Hochfügen that closes off the Pfundsalm pasture on its eastern side.

It can be climbed from the north via the Hochfügen-Hochzillertal ski area. A road closed to public traffic runs from Hochfügen or the Zillertal Höhenstraße to the ridge north of the summit, where the Zillertal Shuttle ends at 2 378 metres. From there a signed path crosses broken rock and slabs up the north ridge, steepening near the top, to reach the top.

The southern route starts at the Rastkogelhütte and takes about two hours. The marked trail follows the crest past the Kraxentrager, another 2 423-metre summit, then the 2 445-metre peak and the Seewand at 2 420 metres before arriving at the Marchkopf.
