Macgregor Monument

The Lanrick Macgregor Monument stands near Deanston in Stirling, a single stone structure shaped like a tree stump. It was built in the early 19th century on the grounds of Lanrick Castle, home of the MacGregor family. Evan John Murray MacGregor is thought to have commissioned the work. The monument was added to Scotland’s list of highest-category listed buildings in 1971. By 2004 it appeared on the register of at-risk historic structures and in 2008 its condition was described as very poor with critical risk. Its design echoes the tree on the MacGregor family crest. Visitors find a layered stone stump with what look like cut-off branches. A round base supports a small round temple of three Doric columns topped by a decorated dome. The rough masonry and simple classical details create a quiet, reflective spot beside the Allan Water.
