The Lizard Lighthouse stands at Lizard Point in Cornwall, the southernmost tip of England. It is a pair of stone towers joined by keeper’s cottages, set on rugged cliffs above the Atlantic. The site has guided ships through the English Channel since 1619. Sir John Killigrew first lit a beacon here, though early efforts faltered. The present buildings date from 1751, when Thomas Fonnereau built two coal-burning towers. Trinity House took charge in 1771 and later replaced the flames with Argand lamps and reflectors.
The lighthouse marks a turning point in maritime safety technology. In 1874 engineers installed electric arc lamps powered by caloric engines and Siemens dynamos. John Hopkinson designed the new catadioptric lenses, and a fog siren sounded every five minutes. By 1903 a giant revolving optic in the eastern tower sent a beam up to fifty miles across the sea. The carbon arc lamp gave way to filament bulbs in 1926, and mains electricity arrived in 1950. Automation ended manned service in 1998, yet the rotating optic still sweeps the horizon.
Visitors find the engine room now houses the Lighthouse Heritage Centre. Original generators, compressors and the 1908 fog siren remain in place. Displays explain how keepers lived and worked, and how lenses focus light across the Channel. The surrounding cliffs offer wide views of the Cornish coast and shipping lanes. Nearby holiday cottages occupy former keeper’s homes. Though the centre is currently closed, the lighthouse itself continues to guide vessels by night.
