Lasörling

The Lasörling is a 3,098-metre peak and the highest summit in its namesake range in the Austrian Alps. It stands between the Virgental and Defereggental valleys, facing the Großvenediger massif. The mountain has two summits: the main top at 3,098 metres and a southeast top at 3,055 metres. Older names include Bergerspitze for the main top and Musspitze or Virgen Lasörling for the southeast top. The name comes from an old German word for ploughshare, linked to the Slovenian word for clearance. The first recorded ascent was made in 1854 by H. v. Acken and his survey team during state mapping work. Carl von Sonklar reached the summit via the northern arête in 1861 after earlier attempts. Sonklar also pioneered routes down the east face and along the northwestern arête. The normal route starts from the Lasörling Hut at 2,350 metres and takes about three hours to climb 748 metres of height. The most popular path runs northwest from the hut into the old mining area of Glauret. The route then turns north over moraine slopes to the Lasörlingscharte notch at 2,950 metres before reaching the summit. An alternative route comes from the Virgental valley through the Lasnitzental valley, joining the main path near the notch. Both routes require sure-footedness and include climbing sections graded at level I.
