Klausenstein

The Klausenstein stands 1,048 metres above sea level in the northern foothills of the Bavarian Forest. It is a densely wooded peak on the edge of Deggendorf district, just 30 metres from the border with Regen district and 500 metres from Straubing-Bogen. The nearest higher summit is the Rauhe Kulm at 1,050 metres, only 270 metres away to the south-east. A second neighbour, the Hirschenstein at 1,092 metres, lies two kilometres to the north-west across the Stiermoos bog. All slopes and the summit itself remain covered in continuous forest.
The Klausenstein is worth the journey for walkers who want quiet high-country paths. Its modest height keeps crowds away, so the summit feels secluded despite the closeness of Deggendorf. The short distance to the Rauhe Kulm makes it easy to include both peaks in one outing. The contrast between the wooded slopes and the open bog near the Hirschenstein adds variety to the route. The border positions give the area a lightly marked frontier feel.
A visitor finds a straightforward climb through spruce and beech woods that open only at the very top. The final metres rise over mossy ground to a small clearing where the trees thin. From here there are glimpses east towards the Rauhe Kulm and west towards the distant Hirschenstein. The surrounding forest stretches unbroken in every direction, making the summit a place of stillness above the valleys below.
