Kirche
The Roman Catholic parish church of Unterretzbach stands on a small hill at the south-eastern edge of the village in the municipality of Retzbach. It is dedicated to Saint James the Elder and belongs to the Lilienfeld Abbey. The church was built in the early 18th century on the site of an older, probably Gothic predecessor. Parts of the tower may date back to Roman times. The interior features rich stucco decoration and wall frescoes showing scenes from Christ’s life. The marble pulpit and the high altar with its 1795 painting of the patron saint are notable. A 1776 organ by Josef Silberbauer, restored in 1994, occupies the gallery. The former churchyard now forms a park where traces of a charnel house survive. The churchyard wall encloses a peaceful garden with mature trees. Visitors can admire the Baroque façade and the delicate stucco work above the altar. The view from the hill takes in the surrounding Weinviertel countryside. Inside, the painted scenes and the restored organ offer quiet moments of reflection.
