Karner
The Karner Mistelbach is a small Romanesque funerary chapel in Mistelbach, a town in northern Lower Austria. It stands between the parish church and the cemetery, protected as a listed monument. The building began as a 13th-century church and was remodelled in Baroque style in 1719. The chapel’s exterior is a round structure with a semicircular apse and a low stone base beneath a gently curved roof topped by a lantern. Slit-like Romanesque windows pierce the walls, and a two-tiered round-arched portal on the north-east side is framed by a Baroque gable with twisted columns and carved foliage. Inside, a Baroque dome vault crowns the upper space, while the lower level has ribbed Gothic vaulting. Visitors find a single-room chapel with a 1728 altarpiece featuring a painted image of Saint Catherine. The late-medieval iron-bound door still carries its twisted ring handle. The quiet setting between church and graveyard gives the place a calm, reflective atmosphere.
