Hohenwart

The Hohenwart stands in the Niedere Tauern range, part of the Eastern Alps. It rises on the main ridge that divides the Pölstal and Wölzertal valleys to the south from the Donnersbachtal to the north. The watershed between the Drau and Enns rivers follows the ridge, bending briefly north at the Eiskarspitz, a western outlier only thirteen metres lower than the summit.

The mountain offers straightforward routes from several directions. The usual route climbs from Pusterwald or Oberwölz over the Pölseckjoch and along the south-east ridge. A slightly harder alternative starts at Donnersbachwald, crosses the Glattjoch, and follows a marked path to the top. Both approaches give wide views across the surrounding valleys and peaks.

At the summit visitors find a modest cross and sweeping vistas. To the south lie the Wildsee and Fischsee, twin alpine lakes set in rock basins. To the north the Eiskar holds a small glacier and the source of the Pusterwaldbach. The ridge continues east to the Hochweberspitze and west to the Glattschartl, offering further high paths for those who wish to explore.
