Hellkirch
The ruin of Hellkirch stands on a wooded hilltop above the Hahnenbach valley in the Hunsrück, between the villages of Hausen, Bundenbach and Woppenroth. It rises about sixty metres above the brook, its thick stone walls still framing a square chamber. The heavy masonry—walls more than a metre and a half thick—suggests great age, perhaps a small religious building such as a chapel. Local speech once used ‘Hell’ for steep slopes, and the name may echo that older term. Some link the site to the nearby Schmidtburg, four kilometres downstream. Above the ruin lie the earthworks of the deserted village of Kaffeld, below them those of Blickersau.
Little survives of the structure beyond the core walls, yet the place holds quiet interest for walkers. The hill is clothed in mixed woodland, and the valley below carries the sound of running water. A forest track climbs from the brook to the hilltop, passing through beech and oak before reaching the ruin. From the crest there are broad views across the Hahnenbach valley and towards the higher ridges of the Hunsrück. The stonework is now partly grassed over, giving the ruin a softened outline against the skyline.
Visitors find only the ruined walls and a sense of isolation among the trees. The square chamber can still be entered, its corners marked by the stumps of former vaults. The site is quiet, visited mainly by local ramblers and those exploring the Schiefer- und Burgenstraße. The nearest settlement, Woppenroth, lies a short walk down the slope, its slate roofs visible through the woodland. The valley path below offers a gentle route back toward Bundenbach or Hausen.
