Globen stands in the Johanneshov district of Stockholm, a spherical building near the Globen metro station. It forms part of Stockholm Globe City and represents the Sun in the Sweden Solar System. The arena was completed in less than three years and opened in February 1989. It has hosted major events like the Ice Hockey World Championships and the Eurovision Song Contest twice. The building was designed by Berg Arkitektkontor AB and its globe structure constructed by Mero-Schmidlin. A small aluminium cottage was placed on its roof in 2009 to symbolise Swedish contrasts.

The arena’s scale is impressive. It is the second largest spherical building on Earth and holds up to 16,000 spectators for concerts. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra recorded a tribute to Avicii after the arena was renamed in his honour. The 2024 modernisation added a retractable acoustic ceiling and gondola seating. Skyview, an exterior inclined elevator, takes visitors to the top for views over Stockholm. The arena has also hosted NHL games and major esports tournaments.

Inside, visitors find VIP boxes and a restaurant in the upper area. The exterior inclined elevator has two spherical gondolas that carry up to twelve passengers each. The aluminium cottage, though removed, remains a notable artwork. The arena continues to host ice hockey, concerts and international sports events. Its position in Stockholm Globe City makes it easy to reach by metro. The building’s design and events reflect both modern technology and Swedish tradition.
