Freiberg
Freiberg is a 1,923-metre mountain in the Caravanche range in southern Austria. It stands in the Northern Caravanche chain near the Austrian-Slovenian border. The summit looks down on the Austrian side of the Caravanche peaks. On clear days the view stretches north to the Koschuta massif. The Alps of Julian and Carnic ranges appear on the horizon when the weather is fine. The height and position make Freiberg worth the climb. From the top walkers see the whole ridge of the Northern Caravanche. The Koschuta’s steep northern face is clearly visible. The Julian Alps rise in the distance, their snow-capped summits catching the light. The Carnic Alps form a lower line to the west. The panorama covers more than a hundred kilometres of alpine scenery. A gravel path leads from the valley to the summit in about two hours. The final section is rocky and demands care. There is no cable car or lift, only the open mountainside. The summit itself is a small rocky knob with room for a few people to stand. The air is cool even in summer. On the descent the path passes through alpine meadows bright with wild flowers.
