Christ Church

Christ Church stands beside the River Cherwell in the heart of Oxford. Founded in 1546 by Henry VIII, it is both a college of the University of Oxford and the cathedral church of the Diocese of Oxford. The cathedral’s dean serves as head of the college, a rare arrangement unique among Oxbridge foundations. The college occupies a large site of about 71 hectares, including Christ Church Meadow, which is open to the public year-round. English Longhorn cattle graze the meadow, where the first hot-air balloon ascent in Britain took place in 1783. Christ Church is one of Oxford’s most visited colleges, attracting nearly half a million visitors annually. Its buildings have inspired copies around the world and appeared in films such as *Harry Potter* and *The Golden Compass*. The Great Dining Hall served as a meeting place for King Charles I’s parliament during the English Civil War. Among its famous alumni are 13 British prime ministers, writers Lewis Carroll and W. H. Auden, and scientists Robert Hooke and John Gurdon. The college also counts Albert Einstein among its associates. Visitors walk through Tom Quad, the largest quadrangle in Oxford, and pass Tom Tower, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The Great Hall remains largely unchanged since the 17th century, with its hammer-beam roof and stained glass. Christ Church Gallery displays paintings by Old Masters, and the cathedral’s nave doubles as the college chapel. The Deanery, a grand 16th-century house, remains the dean’s residence within the main quadrangle. Beyond the buildings, the meadows and riverside paths offer peaceful views of Oxford’s spires and gardens.
