Christchurch, Mercury Fountain, the Great Quadrangle

Christ Church stands in the centre of Oxford, its Great Quadrangle, known as Tom Quad, forming the heart of the college. Founded by Henry VIII in 1546, the college traces its origins to Thomas Wolsey’s Cardinal College of 1525. Wolsey’s plans centred on the Great Quadrangle, completed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 1680s. The quadrangle’s large stone basin dates from this period, originally intended as a water source for emergencies. A statue of Mercury replaced an earlier serpent fountain in 1695, though the first Mercury was destroyed in 1817 during student revelry. The surviving head now resides in the college library, a reminder of past mischief. The present Mercury Fountain was donated in 1928 by Harold Bompas, a former student and art collector. The lead statue copies a 16th-century work by Giambologna, now in the Louvre. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed the pedestal in 1935, and the fountain holds Grade I listed status. In 2022, conservation experts restored the statue, correcting its slant and misplaced arm. The caduceus was regilded in 24-carat gold leaf, restoring its former brilliance. The fountain’s Grade I listing recognises its historical and artistic importance. Visitors find the Mercury Fountain in the middle of Tom Quad, framed by historic buildings. The semi-circular bowl sits atop Lutyens’ stone pedestal, with Mercury balanced on one leg. The quadrangle itself is a fine example of Wren’s work, its stone walls enclosing a quiet space. The restored statue gleams against the older stonework, drawing the eye to its classical details. The college library nearby holds the damaged Mercury head, adding another layer of history. The fountain remains a focal point for both students and visitors, a blend of art and tradition.
