Diözesan-Museum Graz

The Diözesanmuseum Graz stands in the city’s historic centre, in the former Jesuit college now used as a seminary. The building itself is a protected monument in Bürgergasse, a quiet street lined with old houses. The museum belongs to the Graz-Seckau diocese and also serves as the regional office for church heritage conservation. It was founded in 1932 by Bishop Ferdinand Stanislaus Pawlikowski and art historian Johannes Mandl. After wartime closure and a move to the Minorites’ monastery, it settled in its present home in 2008. The museum holds the Austrian Museum Quality Seal for its consistent, high-standard work. Visitors find rooms arranged around a former college courtyard. The permanent displays include goldsmith works, religious paintings and historic vestments. Special exhibitions focus on themes such as Christmas cribs from around the world or the role of animals in biblical art. The building’s vaulted chapels and seminar library add to the quiet atmosphere of study and reflection.
