Goethe-Nationalmuseum

The Goethe-Nationalmuseum stands in Weimar, Thuringia, on Frauenplan where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lived for half a century. The core is his own house, built in the late 18th century and extended in 1935 to create the Goethe-Museum. The ensemble also includes 22 other historic houses and museums across Weimar administered by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. Goethe’s grandson Walther von Goethe bequeathed the property in 1885, and it later became part of the national research foundation before joining the foundation in 1991. The museum presents Goethe’s private apartments and his working spaces exactly as they were during his lifetime. Visitors see the study lined with books, the reception room where guests were received, and the rooms that once held his art collection. His personal library survives intact, and the house still contains his own drawings and scientific instruments. The collection totals about 100,000 items, focusing on Weimar Classicism and Goethe’s wide interests in art and natural science. A special research hall, the Studiensaal, recreates the kind of scholarly meeting place used in his day. Outside, the original garden remains behind the house, and the ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The buildings illustrate Weimar’s role as a cultural centre during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby classical buildings and palaces also belong to the foundation, offering a wider view of the period. The site shows how Goethe organised his life and work, giving a clear picture of a writer’s daily world.
