Weimar lies in the heart of Thuringia, nestled in a gentle river landscape. The old town clings to a bend of the Ilm, while to the north the Ettersberg rises, at almost five hundred metres the highest point in the region. The city is one of the larger ones in Thuringia and forms a cultural and administrative centre between Erfurt and Jena.

Its roots go back to the early Middle Ages, when it was first mentioned in writing in the year . Over the centuries it developed from a small castle settlement into a residence town shaped by noble families such as the Wettins. Artists and scholars shaped its image, including Renaissance painters, Baroque musicians and classical poets. Political decisions were also made here, such as the adoption of the first German constitution.

Today Weimar is best known as a place of cultural heritage. The Bauhaus and classical literature are combined with museums and archives of international significance. Festivals like the Zwiebelmarkt attract visitors, while historic buildings such as the Kasseturm and the Herzogin Anna Amalia Library evoke past times. The city thus brings together history, art and living traditions.
