Hohe Warte

The Hohe Warte is a hill in Döbling, the 19th district of Vienna. It forms the final extension of the Vienna Woods and once hosted a villa district in the 19th century. Today, the hill is entirely surrounded by the city. The Hohe Warte is best known for its role as the headquarters of GeoSphere Austria. It also houses the Hohe Warte Stadium, home to First Vienna FC, Austria’s oldest football club. The hill gained its reputation in 1872 when the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics moved there. The building was designed by architect Heinrich von Ferstel and expanded in 1957. Later additions included a radar tower, a weather balloon hangar, and a new office building in 1967 and 1973. The merger of the institute with the Geological Survey of Austria in 2023 created GeoSphere Austria, which remains based at the Hohe Warte. The stadium, built into the hillside, once hosted national football matches, boxing events, and even operatic performances for crowds over 80,000. Visitors to the Hohe Warte find a mix of scientific and sporting landmarks. The GeoSphere Austria building stands prominently on the hill, surrounded by modern and historic structures. The Hohe Warte Stadium, with its unique hillside design, offers a glimpse into the past. The hill itself provides elevated views over Vienna, blending urban and natural surroundings. The area remains a quiet retreat within the city, where history and sport intersect.
