Döblinger Bad
The Döblinger Bad is a combined indoor and outdoor swimming facility in Vienna’s 19th district, Döbling. It sits between the Heiligenstädter Park and the Hohe Warte, where the Rothschild gardens once stretched until 1977. The site now holds three indoor pools and four outdoor ones. A beach-volleyball court was added in 2004. The hall opened in December 1978 as part of Friedrich Florian Grünberger’s unified Vienna baths plan. The outdoor section opened in May 1988 after the nearby Hohe Warte summer pool closed. The baths contain pieces of art from the former Rothschild gardens. A lion, a Poseidon figure riding sea-horses, a sphinx and a Corinthian column stand in the sunbathing area. A 1978 mosaic greets visitors at the entrance. The indoor section still follows Grünberger’s design with a 25 × 12.5-metre main pool, a learner’s pool and a children’s pool. A sauna and a restaurant were also included in the original plan. Visitors find a calm setting beside the park, with sculptures scattered among the trees. The outdoor pools offer space for swimming and sunbathing, while the indoor hall provides shelter in colder months. The beach-volleyball court draws local players in summer. Families use the learner’s and children’s pools year-round. The mosaic and garden relics recall the site’s past as part of Nathaniel Meyer Freiherr von Rothschild’s botanical gardens.
