St Mary's Church, Osterley

St Mary’s Church stands beside Osterley Road in the London Borough of Hounslow. John Taylor the Younger designed it in the mid-19th century in a Neo-Gothic style meant to recall the Decorated period. Henry Daniel Davies paid for the building as part of his Spring Grove estate, a district of large villas that has since filled with smaller homes and modern flats. The church opened in 1855 under an evangelical minister and was carved from the older parish of Isleworth the same year. Its light-coloured stone hides brickwork, and wide pointed windows line the nave where galleries were planned but never added. The interior holds stained-glass by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, a tall pipe organ, and bright suspended lights above the pillared, vaulted nave. An offset belfry carries a clock tower topped with a spire. The high altar sits beneath a tall stone-mullioned window that lets in extra daylight. The church has kept its evangelical tradition since opening, with services organised around communion and matins. Notable events include the 1899 marriage of Sofia Dalgairns, later head of the Metropolitan Police’s first women patrols. St Luke’s mission church on Kingsley Road, now part of the same parish, runs a gardening drop-in and a clothes bank. The parish once counted 506 names on its electoral roll, and the living’s value rose from £459 in 1875 to £859 in the mid-1950s.
