Hounslow Town tube station

Hounslow Town was a London Underground station in the London Borough of Hounslow. It opened in 1883 on a branch line from Acton Town. The station stood at the eastern end of Hounslow High Street, near Kingsley Road. Its elevated tracks were built to cross the high street by bridge. The line was meant to join the tracks of the London and South Western Railway near Hounslow station. The railway company objected, so the extension never happened. The station closed in 1886 after low passenger use. It reopened in 1903 with a loop line to Hounslow Central and Hounslow West. Electrification came in 1905, but the loop’s sharp curve limited trains to 13 kilometres per hour. The loop closed in 1909 when a new station opened 300 metres west. The old site was then cleared for a bus garage. Today the bus garage occupies the former station site. A plaque in front tells the story of Hounslow Town station. Hounslow High Street remains a busy thoroughfare. The bus garage stands as the last trace of the short-lived Underground branch.
