Saint Peter Church

The Roman Catholic parish church of Moosbach stands in the village of Moosbach in Upper Austria’s Braunau district. Built in 1240 on the site of an earlier chapel, it is dedicated to Saints Peter and Sylvester and belongs to the Altheim-Aspach deanery in the Diocese of Linz. The church and its adjoining cemetery are protected monuments. Its single-nave nave of three bays leads to a raised one-bay choir ending in a five-sided apse. The ribs of the vaults were removed and are now painted on the ceiling. A pointed, chamfered triumphal arch divides the space. On the west side, a wooden gallery from about 1860 spans the entrance, which has a chamfered pointed arch. The porch is rib-vaulted, and the Gothic tower portal features a pear-shaped profile and original iron fittings. The late-Gothic sacristy door is decorated with diamond-shaped wrought-iron hinges. Inside, the furnishings date from 1902–1906. The high altar is a late-Historicist masterpiece showing Saints Peter and Sylvester surrounded by figures of the four Church Fathers and prophets. The early-Baroque pulpit, black and gold, has a sounding board topped by a trumpet angel. The late-Gothic marble font has a polygonal bowl and stem. Six bells hang in the tower, including one cast in 1802. Outside, weathered 16th-century gravestones line the southern wall, one bearing the portrait of priest W. Balthasar Türk, who died in 1709.
