Burg Salzhofen

The Gaugrafenburg Bretten, also known as Burg Salzhofen, stands as the remnants of a hilltop fortress perched 220 metres above sea level on a steep slope near the abandoned village of Salzhofen. It lies 1.75 kilometres south of Bretten’s town church in the Karlsruhe district of Baden-Württemberg. The site dates back to the 11th century, likely built by the counts of the Kraichgau region. Archaeological excavations between 1933 and 1935 uncovered traces of the original structure. What remains today is a modest but evocative ruin. Excavations revealed the base of a residential tower and fragments of defensive walls. These remnants hint at the fortress’s former size and purpose, offering a glimpse into medieval fortification techniques. The site is recognised as an archaeological monument, valued for its historical significance in the region’s early medieval past. Visitors find a quiet, grassy mound surrounded by woodland, with the stone foundations clearly visible. The steep approach adds to the sense of isolation that once made the fortress strategically important. From the summit, views stretch across the Kraichgau countryside, linking the past with the present landscape. The site is small but atmospheric, a place where history can still be touched.
