Melanchthonhaus

The Melanchthonhaus stands in Bretten as a museum and research centre devoted to the Reformation and the life of Philipp Melanchthon. It occupies the spot where he was born before the old house was destroyed in 1689. The present building was erected in 1897 and opened in 1903 after plans by Johannes Vollmer. Hermann Billing and Wilhelm Jung carried out the construction. Nikolaus Müller’s ideas shaped the design. Inside are rooms that display Melanchthon’s writings and the spread of his ideas. A specialist library holds about eleven thousand books on Reformation history. A documentation centre keeps records for international research on Melanchthon. Visitors can follow exhibits on his role as reformer and educator. The research centre supports scholars working on 16th-century theology. Outside, the building sits in a quiet town square in Bretten. The architecture reflects the late 19th-century style chosen for the museum. Nearby streets lead to the town’s other Reformation sites.
