Eddrachillis Bay

Eddrachillis Bay lies on Scotland’s north-west coast in Sutherland, where the dark waters of Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin meet the open sea. Its Gaelic name Eadar Dà Chaolas means ‘between two kyles’, marking the narrow sea-lochs on either side. The bay sits north of the dramatic Assynt mountains and opens towards the Atlantic. Eddrachillis village shares its name with the bay, and both names appear in old records. The Reverend Mackintosh MacKay, later Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland, was born in this quiet coastal spot in the early 19th century. The bay’s remoteness and wild scenery have long drawn visitors seeking peace and open horizons. Its position at the mouth of a sea-loch creates a sheltered inlet surrounded by rolling hills. On clear days the light over the water sharpens the outlines of distant islands. The shoreline shows patches of sand and low cliffs where rock meets tide. A single-track road skirts the head of the bay before vanishing into the hills. Visitors find few buildings except the scattered houses of Eddrachillis and a small jetty used by local boats. The view stretches across the bay to the point where Kylesku narrows into the loch. Walkers follow faint paths along the shore where seals sometimes rest on the rocks. The air carries the scent of salt and heather from the nearby moors. At night the sky is dark enough to pick out the Milky Way above the water.
