Calbha Mor

Calbha Mòr is a tidal islet in Eddrachillis Bay, Sutherland. It stands north of the Kylesku Bridge and west of the Duartmore Forest, far from the main road. The islet covers 70 hectares and has two rounded hills, the higher reaching 67 metres. A smaller neighbour, Calbha Beag, lies nearby, separated by an 11-metre-deep channel. To the east lies the sheltered Bàgh Chalbha, a quiet bay where a fish farm once lost many fish. The islet’s remoteness makes it a quiet place, visited mostly by those seeking solitude. Its landscape of low hills and open ground offers few distractions, only the sound of wind and waves. The deep channel between the two islets keeps them apart even at low tide. The bay’s calm waters contrast with the rougher sea beyond. A visitor finds a small, windswept islet with open ground and two low hills. The higher hill gives views over Eddrachillis Bay and the surrounding coast. The channel to Calbha Beag remains visible, marking the boundary between the two. The bay to the east offers a sheltered spot, though its waters are calm only at certain times. The islet’s quiet and isolation make it a place to escape the usual routes.
