Wolfgangskirche (Seeboden)

The Roman Catholic Wolfgangskirche stands on the Wolfsberg, a hill rising above the Millstätter See ridge in the municipality of Seeboden, near the border with Spittal an der Drau. First mentioned in written records between 1177 and 1187, it serves as a branch church of the parish of Seeboden. The building is chiefly visited on Easter Monday and has been listed as a protected monument. The broad single-nave church has a 15th-century choir with tracery windows and buttresses on the north side. Its squat tower, with slit windows, round-arched sound openings and a pyramid roof, appears to date from the Romanesque period. The 17th-century nave has round-arched windows on its long sides and a circular west window, while plain rounded doorways appear on the west and north fronts. The base cornice runs round the entire structure, and the west wall incorporates carved stones from the 9th or 10th century. Inside, a flat ceiling covers the nave, which contains a wooden Baroque gallery. Figures of the four Evangelists, painted in the 18th century, adorn the nave walls. A pointed, chamfered chancel arch leads to the lower choir, which is roofed by a net-ribbed vault with painted keystones on half-round responds. A pointed arch doorway in the south wall of the choir gives access to the sacristy on the ground floor of the tower. Remaining frescoes depict Saint Wolfgang and the Apostle Bartholomew.
