Antoniuskapelle, Spittal

The Antoniuskapelle stands on the southern slope of Fratres above Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia. This small Roman Catholic chapel is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and belongs to the parish of Spittal. Built in 1675, the chapel was commissioned by Franz Grillenperger, the district judge of Ortenburg, and his wife.
The chapel’s interior features late Baroque art from the 18th century. The altar, made around 1675, shows the Madonna and Child appearing to Saint Anthony in its painting from the late 1700s. Wall paintings from about 1771 cover the barrel vault with lunettes, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Anthony. Wooden candlesticks from the early 1700s and small wooden statues of the Virgin Mary with Child and Saint Joseph with Child, also from the 1700s, add to the chapel’s furnishings.
Visitors find a simple but finely decorated chapel with a polygonal chancel and a bell frame. The sacristy is attached to the east, while a porch shelters the west entrance. The interior’s painted scenes and carved figures create a quiet, reflective space. The chapel’s modest size and historical details make it a peaceful place to visit.
