Hochleitenspitze

The Hochleitenspitze stands at 2,329 metres in the Seckauer Tauern range, a part of the Niedere Tauern in the Austrian Alps. It forms the western end of the Gamskogel ridge, which includes several peaks above 2,200 metres. The mountain overlooks the Triebental valley to the east and the Gaalbach valley to the south. Streams from its slopes feed into the Palten, Enns, Pöls and Mur rivers, linking it to the main Alpine watershed. The Hochleitenspitze is connected by ridges to the Krugtörl pass and the Gaaler Törl, a route used by hikers crossing between valleys. The climb from the Mödringalm to the north takes about three hours and is graded as straightforward. A more challenging route follows the eastern and middle Gamskogel peaks before reaching the summit ridge. The mountain is often included in longer traverses of the Gamskogelgrat, a popular ridge walk in the Seckauer Tauern. The surrounding landscape includes alpine pastures such as the Mödringalm and steep gullies like the Bärentritt and Hühnersteige. South of the summit lies the Gaalbach’s source region with small mountain lakes and the Krugsee. On the summit visitors find a broad, grassy dome with views across the Niedere Tauern and towards the Dachstein massif. The ridge offers narrow ledges and short scrambles, especially on the eastern approach. The surrounding peaks, including the Kesseleck and Amachkogel, form a jagged horizon against the sky. The contrast between high alpine terrain and the forested valleys below is striking. The Hochleitenspitze rewards those who reach it with a sense of isolation and wide-open scenery.
