Gamskögel
The Gamskögel rise above the Triebental east of Hohentauern in the Steiermark. They form the highest crest of the Triebener Tauern, a branch of the Seckauer Tauern within the Lower Tauern. Four summits make up the group: the Östlicher Gamskogel, two Mittlere Gamskögel, and the main Westlicher Gamskogel at the top. The peaks sit on a long ridge called the Gamskogelgrat that stretches east to the Krugtörl and west to the Gaaler Törl. South of the ridge lie the Bärentritt and Hühnersteige valleys with small alpine meadows. Northwards the Triebenbach flows to the Palten and then the Enns, while west of the ridge the Bärntalbach drains to the Pöls. The southern side feeds the Gaalbach, which reaches the Mur via the Ingeringbach. Two marked routes reach the top. From the Mödringalm in the north the climb takes about three hours across open alpine pastures. A more challenging east ridge traverse follows the Östlicher and Mittlere Gamskogel to the Westlicher Gamskogel, graded II with short sections of III. The ridge itself offers sharp ridges and wide views over the surrounding ranges.
