Norwich Playhouse

The Norwich Playhouse stands in St George’s Street on the edge of Norwich’s historic centre. It occupies a converted nineteenth-century maltings building, its red-brick walls and tall windows still showing the original industrial lines. Inside, the auditorium seats three hundred, arranged in a single stalls block with no circle. The theatre receives touring productions rather than staging in-house shows, focusing on comedy, music and cabaret. A bar opened in 1998 along the street front, with a small foyer that fills during intervals. Its reputation rests on the quality of the acts it books. In March 2018 the Playhouse won a Chortle Award as Best Comedy Venue in the East & Midlands. Comedians who have appeared include Mark Watson, Tim Minchin and Sara Pascoe. Stephen Fry, a television personality and theatre actor, serves as a patron. The programme balances well-known names with emerging talent, drawing audiences from across East Anglia. Visitors find a single auditorium with raked seating and warm lighting. The bar serves local ales and simple meals before the show and during the interval. Outside, St George’s Street offers cafés and bookshops within a few minutes’ walk. The river Wensum lies a short stroll to the north, adding a quiet green space after the performance.
