Church of St George

St George Colegate is a medieval parish church in Norwich, East Anglia. The nave and tower were built in 1459, the chancel in 1498, and the aisles and chapels followed in 1505 and 1513. It stands on Colegate, a street that once formed part of the city’s main route to Great Yarmouth. The church has survived centuries of change and remains a quiet witness to Norwich’s past. Its Grade I listing recognises its national importance. The building’s proportions and details show the craftsmanship of the late medieval period. The church houses an organ built in 1802 by George Pike England. The instrument is valued for its historic significance and has earned an Historic Organ Certificate from the British Institute of Organ Studies. The organ’s presence adds to the building’s cultural weight. Visitors can still hear it played during services and recitals. Its case and pipes reflect early 19th-century design. The instrument remains largely intact, offering a direct link to the music of the period. Inside, the nave opens into a broad space with tall arcades and clear glass windows. The tower rises above the west end, its fourteenth-century style still visible. The chancel retains its original roof and fittings from the late 1400s. The aisles lead to small chapels, each with its own character. The organ stands in the north aisle, its case painted in muted tones. Outside, the churchyard contains a mix of old gravestones and mature trees.
