St Alban's Church, Wallasey

St Alban’s Church stands in Mill Lane, Liscard, a quiet street in Wallasey on the Wirral peninsula. Completed in 1853, it is an active Roman Catholic church designed by Stephen R. Eyre and Joseph Hansom. The building is listed at Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. Its stone walls and hexagonal slate roofs give it a solid, dignified appearance. A tall broach spire rises above the northwest corner, marking the church out in the local skyline. The tower contains a stair turret with its own small spire, adding to the skyline’s detail. The church is worth the journey for its clear Gothic lines and the story told in its fabric. Eyre and Hansom planned a six-bay nave but omitted the north aisle to save money. In 1904 the steeple was partly dismantled and rebuilt, and in 1913–14 subsidence forced the rebuilding of the north wall and chancel arch. Wartime bombing in 1941 destroyed fittings such as the high altar and statues, yet the church was restored and re-ordered several times. The 1952 removal of the Stations of Cross canopies and the 1977 re-ordering after the Second Vatican Council show how the building has adapted while keeping its character. Inside, the six-bay arcade rises on quatrefoil piers to a wooden gallery at the west end. The chancel holds a triple sedilia and a two-bay arcade leading to the Lady chapel. Three-dimensional Stations of Cross panels line the walls, each crowded with figures. The east window has four lights, and spherical triangular clerestory windows bring light into the nave. Outside, the tower’s angle buttresses and louvred bell openings frame the broach spire, while the south porch and lean-to aisle add to the varied roofline.
