Wallasey Memorial Unitarian Church

Wallasey Memorial Unitarian Church stands in Manor Road, Liscard, Wallasey, on the Wirral peninsula. Built in 1898–99, it is a brick building with stone dressings and a tile roof, designed in the Flemish revival style. The church has a rectangular plan in six bays with a narthex and a porch with an octagonal turret. Its exterior is notably un-ecclesiastical, lacking Christian or religious imagery. The adjacent church hall is let to Wallasey School of Ballet. The church is notable for its high-quality interior fittings and furniture, designed by craftsmen from the Bromsgrove Guild. Bernard Sleigh painted the panels on the ends of the choirstalls, communion table and pulpit, while Benjamin Creswick carved the figures on the choirstalls. Harold Rathbone created the ceramic reredos at his Della Robbia Pottery in Birkenhead, which is likely the largest work from this short-lived pottery. Walter Gilbert designed the ironwork, including the electric light fittings and copper panels for the lectern. The church is available for meetings, exhibitions and events, and is occasionally used for services of worship. It is licensed for Unitarian marriages. The interior is described as a rare, remarkable example of English Arts and Crafts furnishing in a Nonconformist chapel. The building is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed building and is under the care of the Historic Chapels Trust.
