St Robert's Church

St Robert’s Church stands in the village of Pannal, North Yorkshire, on Main Street at about 85 metres above sea level. The building is a Grade II* listed sandstone church with a crenellated tower that serves as a local landmark. Opposite the church is Pannal Hall, once the home of the Bentley family who owned the land and maintained the chancel. The church began as a 13th-century wooden structure dedicated to St Michael before being rebuilt in the 14th century by Trinitarian friars from Knaresborough Priory. It was rededicated to Robert of Knaresborough, a 12th-century hermit known for his care of the poor. The nave was rebuilt in the 18th century and restored in the 19th, with further remodelling in the 20th. The church is the only one in the United Kingdom dedicated to Robert of Knaresborough, who lived as a hermit near Pannal. His patrons included King John and Sir William de Stuteville, and he received support from local landowners. The church’s history reflects its role as the village’s civic and judicial centre until the 19th century, when it also managed welfare and workhouses. The Bentley family’s memorials line the chancel walls, and their influence shaped the church’s later additions. The parish chest once held civil documents, and the stocks stood by the churchyard gate until the 1960s. Inside, the church shows layers of its past. The 14th-century chancel has decorated tracery and a small stained glass window from Knaresborough Priory. The nave’s Georgian features, including rounded windows and a three-decker pulpit, were replaced in the 19th century. The tower contains a vestry, clock chamber and bell chamber, with a spiral staircase that makes the interior spaces feel compact. The exterior includes a ribbed west door, perpendicular windows and ancient carvings on the tower buttresses. The floodlit tower and the Trinitarian cross in the stained glass recall the friars who rebuilt the church centuries ago.
