Parc Howard Museum

Parc Howard Museum stands in 24 acres of parkland north of Llanelli town centre. The museum occupies a 19th-century Italianate country house built on older foundations. The house was remodelled in 1886 as a mock-castle in Bath stone with a three-arched carriage porch and belvedere tower. The park is registered for its historic interest and includes lawns, a pond, and a sunken garden. A Gorsedd Circle marks where druids held a ceremony during the 1962 National Eisteddfod. The site also features bowling greens, tennis courts, and a children’s play area. The house’s history reflects the Stepney family’s rise from the 16th century. In 1912, Sir Stafford Howard and his wife Katherine funded the purchase and conversion of the estate into a public park and museum. During both world wars, the house served as a hospital for wounded soldiers. Llanelli Borough Council later bought the property and grounds in 1965. The museum’s collection includes Llanelly Pottery and local artworks gifted by Lady Howard in 1933. Visitors find a mix of heritage and nature. The Italianate house contains galleries with Llanelly Pottery and portraits. Outside, the lawns and pond offer quiet walks, while the Gorsedd Circle recalls Welsh cultural traditions. Tennis courts and a play area provide space for recreation. The park’s Grade II registration recognises its historic landscape. The setting combines architecture, art, and open space for all to explore.
