Tabernacl Independent Chapel

Tabernacle Chapel stands in the town of Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. It is an Independent Congregational chapel built in 1872 on Cowell Street. The building is Grade II* listed for its architectural importance. John Humphrey designed the chapel, blending Roman, Romanesque, Gothic, Italianate and Greek styles. The façade features a temple-like arcade with a portico and unusual stone-banding. Inside, curved ribbing supports the plaster roof, and a curved gallery with a pierced semi-barrier runs above a low veneered-walnut wall. The pulpit is much-arched with fine fretwork, and behind it is an organ gallery installed in 1901 by Vowles. The chapel’s history reflects Llanelli’s growth during the tinplate and steel boom. It was established after Capel Als could no longer hold its congregation, with Thomas Johns laying the foundation stone in 1873. By the end of its first year, Tabernacle had 502 members. Ministers like John Ossian Davies and J. Pandy Williams faced challenges, including denominational disputes and early departures. Gwylfa Roberts, a renowned poet and friend of David Lloyd George, led the chapel from 1899 to 1935. During the Great War, 142 members served, and sixteen died; a stained glass window and medals were later commissioned in their memory. Visitors find a finely detailed interior with curved plaster ribs and a gallery above a walnut veneer wall. The much-arched pulpit is covered in fretwork, and the organ gallery dates from 1901. The exterior includes temple-like arcading, a portico, and spearhead railings with twisted uprights. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales holds records and photographs of the chapel. The stained glass window unveiled in 1920 commemorates the war dead, and the chapel’s Grade II* listing recognises its elaborate design.
