Wiesberg Castle

Schloss Wiesberg rises above the Trisanna River at the point where the Paznaun Valley opens into the Stanzer Valley. The castle’s position gives it a commanding view over the surrounding alpine landscape. The river below has carved a deep channel through the mountains, adding to the dramatic setting. The castle’s stone walls and towers stand out against the green slopes that rise behind it. From the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße, visitors can see the castle clearly as they travel through the region. The castle played a role in the defence of Tirol in 1809, when local militia gathered near its walls to resist Bavarian and French forces. From the late 14th century until 1411, the Rottenberger family owned the castle and shaped its early history. Later, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Dukes of Wolkenstein held the property. These historical connections give the castle a place in Tirol’s past. Though it is privately owned today, its past remains visible in the landscape. The Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße offers the best view of Schloss Wiesberg, especially when the road is open. The route winds through high alpine scenery, with peaks rising on either side. In winter the road closes, but the castle can still be admired from a distance. The Trisanna River below adds movement to the scene, its waters flowing swiftly through the valley. The castle’s towers and walls stand as silent witnesses to the history of the area.
