Stockwood Discovery Centre

Stockwood Discovery Centre sits in Stockwood Park on the eastern edge of Luton. The site began as a craft museum in the 1980s and reopened in 2008 after a £6 million redevelopment. It belongs to Luton Culture, the charitable trust that runs the town’s two free museums. Inside, displays cover local social history, archaeology, geology and rural crafts. The Mossman Collection holds the biggest group of horse-drawn carriages in Europe. Outside, a series of gardens shows different historical styles, from Elizabethan knot patterns to wartime vegetable plots. The centre is worth the journey for its unique holdings. The Mossman Carriage Collection contains original vehicles from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Thomas Wyatt Bagshawe, a local historian born in 1901, gathered the rural crafts now in the Bagshawe Gallery. Bagshawe and his successor Charles Freeman studied Scandinavian folk-life museums in the 1930s and used their ideas in Luton. Bagshawe’s systematic search across Bedfordshire villages preserved skills and objects that might otherwise have vanished. His classified notes and photographs form part of the documentation on show. Visitors find indoor galleries and outdoor gardens arranged for easy exploration. The Bagshawe Gallery displays the rural crafts and trades collected by Bagshawe. The Mossman Carriage Collection occupies a dedicated space within the building. Outside, the Period Gardens stretch from a formal Elizabethan knot garden to a Dig for Victory plot. The World Garden, Medicinal Garden and Sensory Garden were added during the 2007 redevelopment. Ian Hamilton Finlay’s sculptures appear in the Improvement Garden, blending art with classical planting.
