The Mossman Carriage Collection sits in Stockwood Park on the edge of Luton, Bedfordshire. It is the largest display of horse-drawn vehicles in the United Kingdom, with original carriages from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The collection also includes replicas made for film work in the 20th century. More than sixty-three vehicles are shown, ranging from everyday tradesmen’s carts to grand state coaches. George Mossman began gathering these carriages after the First World War, turning a childhood fascination into a lifelong pursuit.

The significance of the collection lies in its size and the story behind it. Mossman, born in Luton in 1908, started as a delivery driver for a local butcher before running several businesses and a farm. He later set up a leasing company that supplied horse-drawn carriages for films. In 1991 the entire collection was donated to the Luton Museum Service, now part of the Stockwood Discovery Centre. It remains the largest private collection of horse-drawn vehicles in the country.

Inside the museum visitors see a landau from the 18th century and a barouche from the early 19th century, both in fine condition. An 1890s charabanc stands nearby, recalling the early days of public transport. The displays include luxury carriages used by British nobility and simpler vehicles for everyday use. The setting in Stockwood Park adds a quiet green space for a stroll after viewing the carriages.
