Hallbergsches Schloss (Fußgönheim)

Hallbergsches Schloss stands on the eastern edge of Fußgönheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle complex was built between 1728 and 1731 for Baron Jakob Tillmann von Hallberg, who served as chancellor to the Electoral Palatinate. Its design reflects the early 18th-century tastes of the German nobility. The castle later passed to Heinrich Theodor von Hallberg, who served as envoy in Vienna from 1788 to 1792. After his death in 1792, the estate was sold at auction in 1815 and changed owners frequently. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the castle served many practical purposes. It housed a cigar factory, a prisoner-of-war camp and a Raiffeisen magazine. The building also functioned as a shop, barn and warehouse over the decades. In 1972, the Catholic parish of Fußgönheim bought the castle and began a costly restoration. The former secular middle section became a large church room, now St James Catholic Church, while the historic castle church was reduced to a side chapel. Visitors today find a carefully restored Baroque residence with a church occupying its former hall. The parish has preserved parts of the original inventory, including baroque fittings. The castle church, though smaller now, still shows its historical craftsmanship. The surrounding village of Fußgönheim offers quiet streets and a view across the flat Rhine plain. The contrast between the castle’s noble origins and its later uses adds to its quiet historical interest.
