Holy Trinity Brompton

Holy Trinity Brompton is an Anglican church in London’s Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It occupies six sites across the area, including the main Brompton Road building and smaller congregations at Onslow Square, Queen’s Gate, Courtfield Gardens, Dalgarno Way and Earls Court. The church traces its roots to 1829 when Holy Trinity Church was consecrated after rapid population growth in Kensington. Architect Thomas Leverton Donaldson designed the Grade II listed building, which received a government grant of £7,407 towards its £10,407 cost. In 1852 part of the site was sold to build the Brompton Oratory, leaving the long driveway that now leads to the church. The 1980s saw the crypt converted into meeting rooms and flexible seating introduced to replace fixed pews. The church is recognised for developing the Alpha Course, a worldwide introduction to Christian faith that began as a local experiment. Alpha’s founders refined the programme over twenty years before it gained international attention in the early 1990s. Today the course runs three times a year at HTB, drawing 300–400 guests each time and filling all available spaces. Vicars Sandy Millar, Nicky Gumbel and Archie Coates have led the church through decades of growth, supported by associate vicar Katherine Chow. The church also supports church-planting initiatives, including congregations in Malaysia linked back to HTB. Visitors find a blend of traditional and modern worship across the six sites. The Brompton Road building offers formal services with a professional choir and informal gatherings with extended teaching. The crypt now houses meeting rooms and a bookshop, while St Paul’s Onslow Square provides evening and morning services in a restored space. St Augustine’s Queen’s Gate merged with HTB in 2011 and continues as a welcoming congregation. The church’s pastorate groups of 20–50 people meet fortnightly to offer care and support, reflecting the close-knit community within a large and transient congregation.
