Dormition Cathedral

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God and All Saints stands in Knightsbridge, facing the green of Ennismore Gardens. It occupies a Victorian church built in 1848–1849 for a wealthy Anglican parish. The western façade, remodelled in 1891, closely copies the Basilica of San Zeno in Verona. Inside, much of the original decoration remains from its Anglican past. Lewis Vulliamy designed the church and later the 36.5-metre bell tower, completed by R. L. Roumieu. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Sourozh. It hosts weekly and seasonal services as well as diocesan meetings. In 1956 it was consecrated for Orthodox worship after being leased to the Russian community. The interior features sgraffito and stained glass by Heywood Sumner. The parish grew under Metropolitan Anthony and later Bishop Basil, becoming a centre for multinational worshippers. Visitors find an interior largely unchanged since 1849, with Victorian decoration and stained glass. The western façade’s Lombard arches and brickwork recall San Zeno. The bell tower rises above Ennismore Gardens, a quiet square in Knightsbridge. The cathedral remains a working place of worship, its walls holding services and administrative gatherings.
