St. Canisius

St Canisius is a former Roman Catholic church in Munich’s Hadern district. The Munich architect Franz Rank designed it and laid the foundation stone in 1925. Cardinal Faulhaber consecrated the building on 29 August 1926. The church stands on a quiet residential street lined with late-19th-century villas. Its red-brick walls and tall, narrow windows give it a calm, dignified presence. The building is set back from the road behind a low hedge and iron fence. A small paved path leads from the gate to the main door. The church is worth the journey for its swift construction and early-20th-century craftsmanship. Rank completed the design and building in less than a year. The consecration took place within months of the foundation stone being laid. Hadern was still a semi-rural suburb when work began. The speed of the project shows the confidence of the parish and the skill of Rank’s team. The church remains a local landmark recognised by neighbours and passers-by. Inside, the single nave is plain and well lit by rows of tall windows. The walls are plastered in soft white and the floor is laid with dark red tiles. Simple wooden pews face a raised altar at the east end. The ceiling is a shallow barrel vault of exposed brick. A small sacristy opens off the north side of the chancel. The west front has a single tall door under a plain gable. The quiet interior offers a place for reflection away from the city’s noise.
